Light-curing performance of dual-cure and preheated luting materials under simulated restoration thicknesses: an in vitro study

Abstract (English)
Increased restoration thickness may reduce light transmission and compromise the light-curing performance of luting materials. Although preheated resin-based composites have been proposed as an alternative to conventional resin cements, their behavior under limited light availability remains unclear. This in vitro study evaluated the effect of simulated restoration thickness on the degree of conversion (DC%) and Knoop microhardness (KHN) of a dual-cure resin cement and a preheated resin-based composite. Sixty resin composite specimens were fabricated to simulate restorative layers with thicknesses of 1.5, 2.5, and 3.5 mm ( n = 10). Light transmission was measured to characterize irradiance attenuation through the restorative material. Light-curing performance was assessed by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR-ATR) and Knoop microhardness testing. Data were analyzed using Kruskal-Wallis and two-way ANOVA tests (α = 0.05). Irradiance decreased significantly as simulated restoration thickness increased ( p < 0.05). The dual-cure resin cement exhibited significantly higher DC% and KHN values than the preheated resin-based composite at all evaluated thicknesses ( p < 0.05). Both materials showed reduced light-curing performance with increasing thickness; however, the dual-cure resin cement was less affected by irradiance attenuation and maintained higher conversion and hardness values under reduced light availability. Simulated restoration thickness negatively affected the light-curing performance of both luting materials. The dual-cure resin cement maintained higher degree of conversion and microhardness values than the preheated resin-based composite across all evaluated thicknesses, while both materials exhibited reduced performance as irradiance decreased.
